Tamenglong

Tamenglong is situated in the western part of Manipur bordering Assam and Nagaland in the Northeastern states of India. Communities living in Tamenglong are the Rongmei, Zemei, Liangmei, Hmar, Khasi, Chiru, Kuki and Kharam. It is one of the most neglected districts in the state in overall development aspects.Tamenglong district and its people are seriously affected by the mega projects disturbing the security of local community (140,651 population according to 2011 census). It is being affected by the Trans-Asian railway, proposed Tipaimukh dam, recent oil exploration, National Highway and huge electric tower. Many cultivable lands have been devastated by the construction of the railway, high way and electric tower line. Bad weather roads, poor electricity, poor health services, lack of education centers and poor communication facilities are the common stories of the district. People have limited access to Govt. programs and schemes.

Major rivers in Manipur are in the Tamenglong district. It is one of the most biodiversity rich districts in the northeastern states. There are meadows, caves, waterfalls, lakes and various species of flora and fauna. The petroleum deposit is also one of the natural resources available in the district. The district has good annual rainfall and as a result cultivation of various types of crops is possible. Besides other crops Naga King Chilli, Orange, Ginger, Turmeric is the crops popular in the district. Rare species of plants and animals including orchids, bamboo, Ganmakhian San (typical deer as small as the cat), Guiphuaphoununa (typical tortoise as small as three fingers) etc are available in the district.
